Our middle school students will sign up for one elective for the 2021-2022 school year. Please take some time and discuss our elective class choices with your child this week. Registration forms should be completed by Thursday, June 17. We know this is a short turnaround, but we have been waiting on information to make registration possible. Thank you to everyone for your patience.
Please fill out only one survey per child. Make sure that your child fills out the entire survey. We do our very best to try and get everyone their first elective choice, but sometimes scheduling issues or class sizes drive final class placement. There is a spot for a parent “signature” at the end of the survey.
We do offer a “zero” period PE/health class, which does allow students to take a second elective during the day. Families must provide their own transportation if this PE option is taken. This class typically fills with eighth-grade students.
Learning Strategies – (7th and 8th) year-long elective.
This class is designed for students to take a closer look at their executive functioning skills. Specific lessons will be taught in study skills, organization, planning, working memory, flexible thinking, task initiation, and more. We will also work on developing a Growth Mindset. We will be reviewing and working on current assignments. Grades will be based on participation in daily lessons and some homework assignments.
Middle School Band – (7th and 8th) year-long elective
Students will continue to explore and improve on their instruments. Grades will be based on playing tests, written work, and concert attendance. The middle school bands perform at school assemblies, district activities, and evening concerts.
Middle School Orchestra – (7th and 8th) year-long elective
Students should have played a string instrument for at least one year prior to enrollment. Middle school orchestra students perform at least 4 concerts during the year including: District festival, school assemblies and evening concerts. Grades will be based on playing tests, practice slips and concert attendance.
Mentorship - (7th and 8th) year-long elective - Availability of this elective will be subject to 2021-22 school year covid and safety recommendations and requirements.
An opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to provide one-on-one social and/or academic assistance to a primary or intermediate student with a disability or who may need a little extra help. Mentors will spend the majority of their time working with their assigned mentee each day in their center. Mentors will also have on-going, periodic group meetings throughout the year with Mr. Lewis to help them to become successful and reflect on their experiences as a mentor. Mentors must maintain a high level of confidentiality when it comes to working with their mentee and mentors will be asked to provide regular reflections in the form of a brief journal about their experiences. The cap for this elective will only be 5 - 7 students and priority will be given to 8th year students.
Teacher Assistant - (8th year only) – year-long elective. Extremely limited space.
This is an opportunity for 8th year students only to work as an assistant with any Madrona teacher. Signed agreement required with receiving teacher and an administrator.
Media Tech – (7th and 8th) year-long elective
Creative minds needed! During this year-long elective students gain experience in digital photography, videography, journalism and graphic design. The first semester instruction will emphasize photographic and graphic design skills to produce the Madrona yearbook. We’ll also create content for the kiosk slideshows in the Commons. In the spring students will create short films and more. Products may include story packages for a broadcast, podcasts, and film and photo contest submissions. A favorite project is also creating media for the 8th grade graduation and end-of-year assembly.
