I had the opportunity to develop a climate-justice lesson plan and curriculum that can be implemented in any introductory statistics course (such as MATH& 146). I am a huge proponent of social justice, and I wanted my students to be aware of these issues. Furthermore, I wanted to provide them with an avenue to voice their concerns toward these issues using data-driven results to bolster their arguments. Below you will find the proposed lesson plan for this module:
The goal of this module is to leverage concepts, techniques and ideas that are being learned in a statistics course toward an observational study using data, using it to show the social inequities that may be prevalent in our communities. Beyond their statistical skills, students will be provided with the tools needed to create a compelling case and then organize their thoughts as a policy memo that can be presented to authorities along with their study to create a solid argument for change.
