EdPuzzle

Description: Platform that allows instructors to upload, edit, add questions to videos from existing internet sources (i.e. YouTube, Ted Talks, Khan Academy, etc). Statistics on which students are viewing the videos and question feedback is also available.

Cost: Free for teachers and students; sign up via email address.

Demo: To learn more about this technology and using it as a teaching tool watch my demonstration of EdPuzzle.

UDL

EdPuzzle fits UDL guidelines across all principles; however, it best fits as part of representation.

  • Representation: Options for auditory/visual/kinesthetic delivery of video content; Includes closed captioning. This fits UDL guidelines with providing options for comprehension, allows for language expression, and options for perception.

  • Engagement: Provides choices for student interaction with content beyond just watching a video. Embedded questions provide instant feedback on content mastery allowing students to set goals. This fits UDL guidelines with providing options for self-regulation and options for sustaining effort and persistence.

  • Action & Expression: Allows teachers to determine which students are interacting with the videos and see responses to video questions. This fits UDL guidelines with providing options for executive functions.

For specific areas that EdPuzzle fits the UDL principles, please see infographic below with highlighted areas showing the specific integration of EdPuzzle with UDL guidelines.

Curriculum with Example

This technology tool can be used as a way for students to learn concepts and answer questions during the video to check their understanding of the concepts.

In my A&P class, I incorporate these videos in my online Canvas material to help students dive deeper into the concepts we cover. However, this could also be used in a synchronous class with students answering questions in real-time.

Example: Below is a screen shot of a video assignment about regions of the human body for my asynchronous A&P class. (NOTE: Since login is required to view the actual assignment, I have made a screen shot of the instructor portion of the tool.) I have highlighted the tools available for the instructor and how they are used in the assignment.

SWOT Analysis

Context: Online/hybrid college science (anatomy and physiology) course, but can be used in other situations.

S-This free platform allows teachers to search and customize videos for their class to add interactive question/notes relating to the video. Closed captioning allows for accessibility. Instructors can connect with other teachers and share content. Content can be embedded in Canvas.

W-To use the platform, both teachers and students need to sign up and login with an email address. Editing videos can only be done on videos with a URL; however, teachers can upload their own videos to YouTube to address this.

O-Students get immediate feedback from questions answered and teachers can also see student responses and viewing of videos. Provides integration with auditory, visual, & kinesthetic presentation of content for improved student engagement.

T-There is limited use of this tool as a means of assessment. It does allow for students to upload a video, but the video would have the same requirements for a URL. This would also be limiting for students with access issues to technology or difficulty learning the platform as an assessment.

Comparison to Other Tools

Another technology tool that is similar to EdPuzzle is Panopto. Panopto also has editing features that allow you to add and edit the uploaded video and includes closed captioning; however, it is more of a platform that allows an instructor to create their own videos using Panopto. With Panopto instructors can add interactive questions, manage their video library and it can be integrated in other platforms such as Canvas. Students can view instructors, their screens, and captioning at the same time and can search the video for specific topics, which are features unavailable in EdPuzzle. A limitation of Panopto is that it doesn't include a searchable database for instructors to find prerecorded videos. Both EdPuzzle and Panopto could be used for student content submissions, but the same limitations apply as discussed above.

Reflection

I have used this tool primarily to deliver content in an asynchronous manner to students. In this analysis, I learned that this tool can also be used to deliver content and have students answer questions synchronously. There is also a way to have students use this tool to create their own videos with questions or comments about the video. More information about how students can create their own video lessons using EdPuzzle is available from their technical help site. While I will not likely use this as an assessment tool since there are other technology tools that fit my assessments better, I will consider using this in synchronous classes.
