The John P. Stevens High School Orchestra Program in Edison, New Jersey, is a public school music program that provides students in grades 9–12 with the opportunity to develop their musical skills across multiple ensembles. Led by Dr. Brian Verdi and Mr. Justin Lee, the program has grown significantly under their leadership to 160 students. The orchestra offers a variety of performance groups, including the Freshman Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra, and String Quartets, all of which have received awards for their performances at regional and national competition.
The mission of the JPSHS Orchestra Program is to foster lifelong musicianship by providing students with a comprehensive, diverse, and challenging music education. Students perform a wide range of music from Baroque to contemporary, gaining skills in ensemble playing, musical interpretation, and community outreach. The program emphasizes performance opportunities, such as senior home visits and school events, and has consistently earned superior ratings in competitions. The program also encourages student leadership through the Orchestra Council, which assists in planning events and maintaining communication within the group.
The Orchestra Parent Association (OPA) plays an important role in supporting the program by fundraising, organizing events, and providing resources that aren't covered by the school budget. Parents also volunteer their time and skills to support various aspects of the program, including chaperoning, photography, and accounting. The OPA helps enhance the student experience by providing scholarships, supporting community engagement, and ensuring the continued success and growth of the orchestra.
