1. Read the story.

2. Read the story & think about:

  • What was the problem/challenge?
  • What did the character learn & how did the character change/grow?

3. Pick 1-3 theme topics about the lesson learned.

4. Write a theme statement about a topic - what is the author telling you about the theme topic?

a. Ex: The author is saying honesty is important OR

b. Ex: The author is saying honesty can hurt people's feelings.
