This module focuses on hope and optimism as two vital constructs for bouncing back from adversity. Setbacks are seen as a learning opportunity for the individual.
The hope component explores goals, what are they and how to set them through the SMART goal model. Goals provide motivation, a clear path and a way of measuring continual improvement. We look at pathways, agency and barriers to goal attainment around mental health and wellbeing through the context of football (Snyder, 2000).
Optimistic individuals enjoy healthier relationships, successful careers, frequently experience positive emotion and obtain the goals they set themselves. The theory of learned optimism (Seligman, 1995) will be explored to differentiate thinking styles that develop optimism rather than helplessness. Recognising pervasive, permanent and personal thinking styles and reframing them to learn optimistic thinking patterns when difficulties arise, supports mental health and wellbeing.
