What is the Thespian Club?
The EHS thespian club is an amazing opportunity for students to connect and develop their skills outside of the mainstage shows! From 24 hour plays, to thespian movie nights, to cabarets, to the MN Student Thespian conference, the club is an amazing way to meet students of all ages involved in the club, and in the greater Minnesota thespian community! Follow our instagram (@edinathespians) and schoology group (join code: 9F4BS-XMBX7) for upcoming events!
Can I get cast as a freshman?
Yes! It’s a common misconception that freshmen don’t or can’t get into high school productions. Though there are cuts in the program, you shouldn’t let this prevent you from auditioning. Theater is open to all!
Do I have to do mainstage shows to be involved?
No! You don’t have to do mainstage shows to be involved with theater. There are many other opportunities available to you, even if you choose not to do the three mainstage shows of the year. You can participate in The Thespian Cabaret (kind of like a talent show), the 24 Hour Play (a mini play that is created all in the span of 24 hours), Theater For All (a class which performs one production at the end of each semester) and more!
What do auditions look like?
The specific expectations and materials for any given audition are unique to the show, and director. For specific materials, watch out for announcements in the weeks leading up to the upcoming show! For play/one-act auditions, you will often be asked to prepare one or more short provided monologues or sides (scenes). Musical auditions will expect the same, in addition to asking that you demonstrate your singing, and dancing abilities. Expect to prepare your monologue/side, and a song with accompaniment (you may choose between a provided cut, or 30-45 seconds of a song you choose - an accompanist will be provided). For your dance audition, you will be taught a brand new dance combination on the day of the audition.
What are audition workshops?
Audition workshops are a resource for students preparing to audition! This is a chance for you to meet your director, learn more about an upcoming show, and interact with some of the audition materials! Attendance at the workshops is not required - this is not a pre-audition, and will not alter the director’s casting decisions. This is simply an opportunity offered, which helps students feel as confident as possible before their audition.
What if I participate in other activities?
There are a wide variety of ways to be involved to fit your schedule, from high commitment mainstage shows to low-pressure one-off performance opportunities! No matter what activities you are involved in, there is a place for you in this club - keep an eye out for upcoming activities on the EHS thespians schoology group!
When does information about future shows come out?
The announcement for the next year’s musical comes out in the spring, with audition information usually sent out before or in July. The One-Act and Spring Musical (new this year!) are announced at the end-of-year banquet; expect audition information to be sent out in the few weeks leading up to auditions. For more detailed dates, check the year-long calendar.
