8th Grade

Essential Standards

The eighth grade Mathematics courses build on the essential standards explored in seventh grade courses through greater emphasis on algebraic strands. Students in eighth grade begin to develop a sense of the connections between algebraic, geometric and graphical applications through rich discussions emphasizing equations and expressions, basic functions, intermediate geometry, and bivariate analysis. The topics covered in the eighth grade Mathematics courses form the basis for much of the high school curriculum. Eighth grade Mathematics courses are leveled (Modified, Regular, and Honors) in order to differentiate student academic needs, but at their core all levels will be founded on the following essential standards:

Equations & Expressions

  • Bivariate linear equations and inequalities
  • Rate of change
  • Systems of equations
  • Pythagorean theorem
  • Binary operations with scientific notation

Functions

  • Properties of functions
  • Linear vs. nonlinear

Geometry

  • Parallel lines and transversals
  • Transformational geometry
  • Congruence and similarity
  • Distance between two points
  • Volume of cones, cylinders, and spheres

Statistics & Probability

  • Scatter plots
