Welcome to the second July 2023 Asynchronous Module
In this session, we will meet and learn more from one of our very own Data Fellows, Carol Maitland!
By the end of the session, Data Fellows will be able to
Learn more about the work happening in Lake Worth ISD
Get best practices from a colleague on the work that is happening on the ground
Meet Carol Maitland
Carol is starting her nineteenth year in education this year and her tenth year in Lake Worth ISD. She has been a Data Fellow since the beginning and loves the work she is doing in Lake Worth ISD with creating a culture of data-driven instruction.
In her free time, Carol loves scuba diving.
Carol's advice:
"Always be flexible. My education journey has taken me from teaching a multitude of science topics, pharmacy, and then campus to district administration and even at the collegiate level.
I always strive to improve by continuously learning something new every day."
Lake Worth ISD

Part I: Leverage Up
"Don't be afraid to reach out to others for help as you go through the Data Fellows programs. I've learned so much from others."
One of the biggest pieces of advice Carol has for Data Fellows is to level up your own professional development. Find people you haven't met before, leaders you need to build a relationship with, and other Data Fellows within our program and make connections.
There are two big ways to leverage up in this role:
Reach out to others
Look for and attend all trainings (even those that are not required!)
Helpful Resources
Sign up for TEA updates here
Peruse the TEA Learning Hub for RSSP and Data Fellows resources
Explore the Lead4Ward site for resources you can use to train teachers and leaders; sign up for sessions with them that are relevant and helpful
Attend platform-specific training through your chosen platform; they often have modules and Office Hours you can attend!
Activity: Head to your note-catcher and list out the ways you have leveraged up (either in this role or in a previous role).
How did it help you accomplish something you needed to accomplish?
What was the result of your efforts?
Who is one person you want to commit to reaching out to this week in order to advocate for yourself and your work as a Data Fellow?
Part II: Actively Solicit Stakholders' Input
"Be your advocate. Know where your district's strengths and gaps are and advocate for what you need, when you need it."
Use your own creativity to determine the best systems to put in place to help you manage all of the work. Carol created a Google Site where everything is housed and visible to leaders across her district. This site is updated frequently and serves as a landing page and as soon as something is updated, an email goes out to the relevant stakeholders so they know to check their dashboards for new data and information.
Once these systems are in place, reach out to stakeholders to seek their input on your dashboard. Ask for feedback frequently.
Helpful Resources
Learn how to create a Google Site here
Use a calendar sharing site, like Calendly, to allow colleagues in your district to schedule appointments with you.
Gather feedback from stakeholders on your dashboard using a platform like Google Forms so you can collect feedback in one place.
Create a new workflow using a system like Trello or Google Tasks. You can see our previously released synchronous session from 2022 that goes into depth on these project management systems here.
Activity: Head to your note-catcher and respond to the following reflection questions:
What is one system you have put in place that makes accessing your dashboards more efficient for you or for colleagues in your district?
What is one system you can put in place this year to solicit feedback from stakeholders more efficiently?
Take 15 minutes to explore that new system or set it up!
Part III: Automated Integration
"Automation allows you to be creative with the dashboards you can create. When you don't have to spend all of your time doing what can be automated, you can create new and cool visuals."
Determine external partners that can help you automate integration at your district. This will allow for you to have live dashboards that update automatically, which will free up your time to do other things in your district.
Activity: Head to your note-catcher and respond to the following reflection questions:
How have you automated systems in the past to increase your efficiency?
What is one thing you'd like to learn how to automate to make your work more efficient?
Take 15 minutes to research next steps and create priorities for yourself moving into this school year.
