Teaching and learning at Kaleen is built upon a culture that promotes learning for all students. In 2016, the school began the process of supporting student wellbeing and behaviour through the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Framework. PBL is widely reflected across our school community as “Wellbeing At Kaleen” (W@K). Through this approach, the school has put strong emphasis on consistent language and the implementation of processes to support student behaviour. The staff and school community worked collaboratively to select “safe, respectful, responsible, learners” as our four overarching expectations.
The framework was formally “launched” in 2018, with the introduction of universal interventions, and as of 2022 classroom and school systems are firmly embedded in our daily operations. In 2019, the school experienced a 65% reduction in major negative student incidents and this has been maintained to present (with minor variance each year). The school is assessed annually by our external PBL coach using the School Evaluation Tool (SET) to measure the success of our implementation. Our baseline assessment score of 44.9% has progressed to 100% over the 5 years of assessments (see table below from impact report).
The PBL team and school executive regularly review our school data (minor and major behaviours logs and teacher feedback) to determine which types of behaviours are trending, where they are happening and who is involved. This information is used to find solutions to perceived problems (E.G. Additional LSA support for particular areas/students, help to engage in particular activities, peer mediators etc.). This is supported by our school PE@K (Passion and Enrichment @ Kaleen) play break initiatives (E.G. PE@K Lunch Clubs, the student led Party Play program, introduction of creative play and designated digging areas etc.) and informs our school's 'Four Week' focus for both our junior and senior school students.
Students' positive behaviours are acknowledged and they receive W@K tokens to achieve whole school incentives and individual collector cards when they level up. On top of this, students receive special prizes from the PBL Shop to acknowledge their achievements at levels 2, 6, 10 and 12.
Kaleen maintains high expectations for our students at all times, while differentiating necessary supports for students to achieve. As part of this strategy, the school has implemented a consistent response to problem behaviour in the classroom and playground, a high frequency positive recognition system and a systematic way of teaching expected behaviour. These initiatives and the PBL framework support us to constantly enhance our school programs.
There are high levels of trust between all members of the school community which is evident in our positive School Satisfaction Survey results.
Kaleen Primary School will continue to enhance our positive school culture. In the future, we will focus on wellbeing & HPE as a part of the specialist program and merge STEM & Sustainability to embed these practices. We will also consolidate the work we have done in PBL universal and classroom systems and transition to strengthen our targeted and individualised interventions. In the coming years, we will continue to explore evidence based strategies to increase student centred and student led PBL initiatives.
