Dance classes aim to develop students’ technical skills, safe movement practices, and creative expression through choreography and performance. Students engage in improvisation, choreographic tasks, and group and solo works, with opportunities to perform at school and community events. With two Dance units offered, Dance Performance develops students’ skills in choreography, performance, and production. Students learn to create and refine dance works for major events such as Entertainment Night and the Ausdance Youth Dance Festival, gaining experience in technical and practical aspects of performance. Whilst Dance Workshop explores choreographic ideas using dance elements and devices, producing original compositions with meaning and intent. Group performances and written tasks encourage collaboration, critical reflection, and an appreciation of diverse dance genres.

Drama in Years 9 and 10 is available for both new and continuing students. Students will be exposed to a range of techniques and skills. These will include script work, character work, improvisation, play building, voice work and melodrama. Studying the performing arts will help students improve their confidence, creativity, stagecraft and performance skills, as well as develop dedicated work and team habits.

These are structured music classes expanding on the Year 7/8 unit to increase students’ understanding of the concepts of music performance and theory. Students will have the opportunity to complete self-paced practical work aimed at increasing performance skills on their chosen instrument. Students in Band will gain a comprehensive foundation in instrumental music. They will learn to read and interpret musical notation, properly care for and maintain their instruments, and develop attentive listening and critical analysis skills to enhance their musical understanding. Students will learn about the ‘behind the scenes’ aspect of live production work. They will learn about the role of a Stage Manager in productions and the different technical roles including sound engineer, lighting designer/operator and stagehands. They would learn how to manipulate sound and lighting production elements to create and enhance moods during productions, and to promote a positive audience experience. These skills would be put into practice at school events such as assemblies, Arts Fest, Entertainment Night and drama productions. Students will also have opportunities to observe professional venues/situations through excursions to venues like the Canberra Theatre Centre.
External specialists would also be invited to come in and work with the class. Students would also learn about how WHS principles apply to this industry, and how they can ensure they are working and operating equipment in a way that complies with these principles.

Throughout this course students will learn how to produce a film from its initial idea through to the final edit and screening. Students will work in groups to create a variety of film projects whilst developing practical and theoretical skills in Media. Students will gain a thorough knowledge in the underlying principles and techniques of media production including video, script writing, storyboarding, branding, editing (Adobe Premier Pro), sound and special effects and motion graphics.

This course is designed to equip students with practical skills in digital image capture and establishing a digital workflow, and increase student knowledge of, and critical appreciation for photography as a fine art medium. Students will gain skills in using camera controls effectively; understanding exposure and measuring light; managing the digital darkroom (including skills in RAW file processing, smart object workflow, organising and storing digital files), and image editing using Adobe software (including skills in colour and tonal correction, retouching, working with layers, selections, and layer masks, and basic composition). In both making and studying, students reference, analyse and interpret the practice of relevant photographers and digital artists, to develop their understanding and knowledge.

Students engage in a rich exploration of visual arts through diverse units including sculpture, mural street art, painting, drawing, and printmaking. These experiences foster technical skill development and personal expression through hands-on experimentation and conceptual thinking. Students create contemporary sculptural works using techniques such as carving, molding, and armature construction, while also refining their visual language through painting mediums and colour theory. Across all units, they gain practical experience and explore the cultural significance of visual art. By studying influential artists, art movements, and diverse cultural traditions, students deepen their understanding of the social, historical, contexts of art, cultivating their unique artistic voice and contributing meaningfully to the visual culture of their school and broader community.
