Building a poster is a fun way to see a student develop an understanding over time. It allows the freedom of writing, drawing, and even video if your posters are digital! Starting at the top of their poster, the teacher will prompt some thinking which the student will respond to, and this will continue as the lesson develops. The teacher will be able to see in real-time how the class is progressing and can steer the lesson to respond.

Poster Building can help teachers:

• by being versatile. Posters can be large or small, complex or very simple

• Get a variety of responses, such as: drawing, writing, concept mapping, vocabulary, or can even be digital

• get students to provide peer feedback, or can be used as checkpoints for self-assessment during the course of a unit. Read more about these assessments HERE.

• Mark off sections of a poster or paper beforehand to help manage the use of space

• Build a poster as a class, where students can all contribute to a much larger piece of work

• Provide posters to the students to evaluate

• Provide different colour markers, and a list of what type of information should be written with a particular colour, (i.e. red for vocabulary, blue for big ideas)

• Hang the posters for a gallery walk and allow students time to evaluate the work for a class discussion about their learning
