What are the risks?
Plagiarism Risks
At the present time, plagiarism detectors find it difficult to pick up AI-generated text or paraphrasing
Students can ask AI to write answers to questions, and the AI produces relatively natural text in response
Students can ask AI to write an essay, and the AI produces an essay
Students can ask AI to generate ideas or quotes, and the AI produces relatively accurate answers
AI editing tools are increasingly built into word processing programs, or freely available as plug-ins
Students may not understand the ethical implications of presenting AI content as their own
Students using AI spelling and language checkers, and/or getting AI to write for them links to the old problem of students whose parents, tutors or carers write their work
AI tools in themselves are subject to query about the 'ownership' of a source or style, particularly when using images.
Example: Quillbot
Quillbot is a free paraphrasing generator. It has premium features that can be purchased, but you do not need them for this example.
Go to: https://quillbot.com/
Paraphrase a piece of text. This may come from a scholarly article in your discipline, a piece of your own writing, anything you can cut and paste.
Use the slider bar in the top right to increase the number of changed words. Note that some features will be locked to the paid/premium model.
Hover with the mouse over coloured words in the paraphrase. You can see definitions and change the word if you wish to.
Cut and paste the paraphrased and original version into your workbook.
NB: we have had some feedback that quillbot is blocked by some schools. If this is the case, try accessing it through another network you have access to (e.g. home, phone, ACT Libraries). If copy/pasting is problematic from the other source, note that it was unavailable in your workbook.
Our example with Austen's Pride and Prejudice is below:
Watch and Reflect
Now watch as much of this Youtube video as you can manage. It is a content farm that claims in its bio that it is based in Nigeria. It is also very easily accessible to students on the internet, and demonstrates how to use Quillbot to plagiarise.
Without using AI, dot point out some of the plagiarism risks in your discipline in your workbook.
For fun: Extra Texts
These texts are not compulsory, nor are they assessed. They are aimed at helping you to interact more with the concept of "content farms".
Extra viewing: Ann Reardon is an Australian food scientist who gained popularity for her baking videos, but in recent years has created videos debunking the videos of content farms. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPT0YU_0VLHxJMqHBC2_OMTYWwQ5z_iP4
Extra reading: This article about algorithm-generated videos on Youtube is a little old now, but still interesting. It covers the growth of strange algorithm-generated content in Youtube Kids. NSFW content. https://medium.com/@jamesbridle/something-is-wrong-on-the-internet-c39c471271d2
