You Have Questions, We Have Answers...
Do I have to know how to play an instrument to join Band? No! We will teach you everything you need to know.
How do I know what instrument I should play? Will I get to play whatever I want? Students will be screened starting the first week of school. They will try out all of the wind instruments. Once all the wind instruments have been tried out, they will have the option to try out for a percussion spot. We consult with each student and make instrument placements based on a combination of their preferences and what we feel they will be the most successful playing. We do encourage you to look at the "Beginner Band Instrument Demonstration Videos" section on the "Audio and Video" page. There, you can watch videos of professionals and students demonstrating each instrument.
Does it cost a lot of money to be in Band? No! While we encourage students who are selected to play flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or percussion to provide their own instrument, the band’s goal is to be able to provide every student an instrument to use at no cost. In fact, we assume that every student will be using a school instrument unless told by a parent they will be providing their own. We want every student to enjoy the benefits of band. Parents, please do not let money be an issue to keep your child from being part of the band.
Who will be in the Band? Your friends and fellow classmates will join you in what will be some of the most exciting times of your school days. Many of our band students are among the leaders in academic achievement, school spirit, and club activities.
What are the advantages of being in band? The most obvious is learning to play an instrument for your own pleasure. Other advantages include concerts, trips, parties, and learning a skill that you can use for the rest of your life. Look here for other reasons everyone should be in band.
Will braces affect what instrument I play? No. All instruments can be played with braces. Also, you won’t have braces forever. Don’t let a temporary issue keep you from something so exciting!
I have asthma, so I can’t be in band, right? You can still be in band if you have asthma. While the instruments do require you to blow through them to make a sound, the amount of breath is no more than you would normally use. You only use the breath differently. In fact, many of the same breathing techniques used to play an instrument are the same used by your doctor to help you breathe better.
Can I be in athletics or play sports while I am taking Band? Absolutely! 6th-grade students don’t participate in the athletic program at Legacy Middle School, but 7th and 8th grade do. Most of our 7th and 8th-grade band students are in band and athletics and do so without problems. Even high school members can participate in band and athletics with no conflicts.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact the Legacy Middle School Band Directors.
