Mülheim an der Ruhr is a beautiful city with industrial monuments, cultural features and, due to the river Ruhr, natural aspects. We do, however, have a high rate of unemployment and many students from families with low income as well as multi-cultural backgrounds. Our school emphasizes the importance of education for everyone and, besides having a branch of bilingual classes- these students are taught Geography, History and Politics in English-, we offer our students intensive lessons in Maths, Computer Science and technical workshops. Since many of our 950 students are not originally German, they have learned to deal with different cultures, languages, and how to be tolerant. We are an official "Europaschule" as of December 2011 and one of the key aspects embedded in our school’s curriculum is the development of European values. Currently, we have 30 refugee children attending special DaF- Classes- Deutsch als Fremdsprache- German as a foreign language. We encourage intercultural learning processes which enable our students to define their own identity and build a European dimension at the same time. We offer modern foreign languages: English, French, Spanish as well as Italian, as well as after-school extracurricular activities. Our students get the opportunity of learning about other cultures in Europe by having them involved in Erasmus+ projects, internships in England and France as well as regular exchanges with schools in the Netherlands, England, France and Poland. We have also participated in European competitions- "62. -66. Europäischer Wettbewerb"- and have been honored with 1st to 3rd placements for the last four years. Our school’s aim is to extend our international contacts, especially through participating in another Erasmus+ project. It would offer our students and our teachers the possibility to consolidate their intercultural competences. Having encounters with fellow Europeans from different cultures and working together on a common project which sustains the European values would be very beneficial for our school. Also the use of foreign languages as an instrument for communication in a concrete situation gets a practical meaning for our students, losing its abstract aspect and it contributes to the major improvement of their language competences. The key Erasmus team consists of 3 teachers, all who have been intensively involved in various Erasmus and other exchange projects. Together we cover almost all subjects taught in our school- from languages to Art, Music, Geography and History to Chemistry and Biology.
