WEEKLY UPDATE
Good Afternoon Parents and Carers,
This week in Reception, the children have been putting their phonics knowledge to the test! They have been working hard to independently spell words from our class book “The Leaf Thief.” The children loved helping the squirrel from our story rearrange his lost words, using their fantastic segmenting and blending skills.
In Maths, we have been focusing on counting objects, actions or sounds once. We have also been exploring the number 5 using our fingers and counters on die frames. The children have learned that 5 and 5 make 10 altogether—a brilliant early step in building number bonds.
Looking ahead, next week is our whole-school Learn Through Week. Our focus will be on charity, with special activities linked to Children in Need.
Halloween Disco:
If your child is attending the Halloween Disco, please send a named bag with their change of clothes so they can get changed in the afternoon.
Home Learning:
All children have now been sent home with a reading book that contains CVC words (consonant–vowel–consonant words, e.g. cat, dog, sun).
This week’s home learning focus is to spend time reading this book together. Please encourage your child to:
Lay their book flat on the table or floor.
Use their index finger to point to each sound in the word.
Blend the sounds together to read the whole word.
Regular practice will help your child build confidence and fluency with early reading skills.
Thank you for your continued support. Congratulations to Max in Team Swale and Eliott in Team Nidd who won our reading prize for reading their phonics book x3 at home.
We’re so proud of how hard the children have been working and can’t wait for another exciting week of learning ahead!
Warm regards,
The Reception Team
