Recorder Practice

Each East Penn elementary student will have the opportunity to learn recorder in third grade. Playing the recorder gives students valuable experience with playing an instrument. Learning the recorder in third grade can help students decide if they want to sign up for band/orchestra at the beginning of fourth grade. To learn the recorder, students use the "Recorder Karate" program. Students learn the basics of recorder (how to hold the instrument, how to blow through the instrument, how to play various notes, etc.), and as they progress through the program, they "play off" a series of songs. Each time a class plays off a song, they earn a "belt" that is tied to the bottom of their recorders. By the end of the unit, the students' recorders are VERY colorful!

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR RECORDER:

- Treat it with care at all times! Remember - it is not a toy.

- Keep it inside the case when it is not being used.

- Never eat or drink anything while playing your recorder.

- After practicing, use the cleaning rod (with a piece of cloth attached) to clean out the inside of the instrument.
