Attendance/Tardiness
Students are to arrive at school on time each day. If you bring your child to school late, you must walk him/her to the office and sign in. In the case of an absence, please complete an excuse blank and send it to the office within three days of the absence. Extended absences due to vacations should be taken care of prior to the vacation. You can obtain a vacation form from the office or use this link to print your own. Completed forms should be completed and returned to school before vacations. Please feel free to send in your vacation form with your child.
Behavior
MUSTANG MUSTS
*Be SAFE
*Be RESPECTFUL
*Be RESPONSIBLE
*Be KIND
SWPBIS stands for School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. It is a program that focuses on prevention through the creation of a school culture that is positive, safe, predictable and consistent.
The goal of SWPBIS is to create a social culture in our school that will encourage positive behavior and interactions while discouraging problem behaviors. This social culture will lead to a safe environment where students achieve academically and build positive relationships with each other and adults. The foundation of the approach emphasizes teaching students the behaviors we expect to see, providing reminders when needed, and acknowledging expected behaviors.
Birthdays
Students may bring in a small non-edible treat to share with their classmates on their birthday. Students with birthdays over the summer months when school is not in session can bring in a treat on their half birthday. Participation in this is completely optional.
Dismissal Changes
If there is a change in your child’s normal routine, please notify us in writing the day the change will occur. We must receive something in writing from a parent if any child is to change his/her normal method of transportation. You may use the assignment book to notify us of the change. Adding a telephone number where you can be reached is also helpful.
Grading Scale
East Penn School District has adopted the following grading scale:
4: Meet Standard 3: Advanced Progress Toward Standard 2: Developing Progress 1: Limited Progress
East Penn is now using standards based grading. Your child's teacher will be discussing the new report card throughout the school year. We are working in trimesters this year, and parents will have many opportunities to discuss progress made toward meeting grade level standards.
Guidance
Shoemaker's school counselor is Ms. Kate Petcavage. Her email is kpetcavage@eastpennsd.org. She meets with classrooms monthly to teach lessons promoting respect, kindness, citizenship, friendship, cooperation, and other character traits. She is also available to individual students should you have any concerns.
Homework
Please note, this section may vary based on your child's individual teacher. In second grade, the average amount of time for homework is twenty minutes a night.
Homework is given nightly Monday-Thursday. Homework is meant to reinforce concepts learned in class. If you find that your child is struggling with homework or it is taking longer than twenty minutes to complete their homework, please let your child's teacher know.
In addition to homework, students should be reading throughout the week at least 15-20 minutes a night. (Need book suggestions? Just ask!) Occasionally challenge homework may be given on Fridays and due Monday. Projects such as book reports may be assigned on Fridays but never due the following Monday!
Please support your child when doing homework at night. This reinforces to your child that homework is important in school and should be completed. If you have any questions about homework, feel free to email your child's teacher at any time.
Some additional things to remember about homework….
Encourage your child to read all the directions before starting.
Please have your child complete their homework with a pencil (unless the directions specify to color).
Homework is meant to teach responsibility and not be a major challenge for your child to complete and should not take a long time. If you find that he/she is struggling with the work or getting overly frustrated, please stop the activity. Let your child's teacher know so that they can work on that skill together at school.
Mustang Meetings
Shoemaker will conduct whole group Mustang Meetings agains! Check the Shoemaker calendar for dates. Don't forget to wear your t-shirts to show your Shoemaker spirit on Mustang Meeting days!
Mystery Reader
*Your child's teacher will let you know if and when we can welcome Mystery Readers back into our classroom. Thank you for your understanding, we can't wait to see you back in our classrooms!
Some basic guidelines for “Mystery Reader”
Please choose an appropriate book for our grade level. Students can usually sit attentively for about 20 minutes; a book that is too lengthy may be difficult for them to focus on. If you need suggestions, please let me know!
Please make sure to wait outside of our classroom as you want your child to be surprised! They are easily excitable and enjoy the thrill of a surprise guest!
You need your clearances to be a Mystery Reader.
Nurse
Shoemaker's school nurse is Mrs. Tracey Miller. His email is tmiller@eastpennsd.org.
PTO

Seesaw
This year Shoemaker is using Seesaw. Seesaw empowers students of any age to create, reflect, collaborate and share. It allows for family members to use the Seesaw app to keep up to date with their child's learning, and easily communicate between school and home. If you have not yet downloaded the Seesaw app, click the link here and get the necessary information from your child's teacher to complete your account. Check the app regularly for classroom reminders, Shoemaker updates and school announcements.
School Hours
School begins at 9:00 and ends at 3:20.

Each month Scholastic book order forms will be sent home with your child. Scholastic provides an array of great children's books that you may purchase for your family. Orders can be sent into school via paper order form and check OR you may place your order online. (No cash payments will be accepted.) Please use your child's class code to order online. List below are the classroom codes. Scholastic book orders are optional. Look for new Scholastic brochures each month!

Snack
Please pack a healthy snack for your child daily. Be sure to put it in a pocket away from their packed lunch so they know to save it for the appropriate time. We would greatly appreciate a snack that can be stored and eaten with little to no mess.
Student Insurance
The East Penn School District does not carry medical insurance on students however the East Penn School District does provide an opportunity to select a primary excess group insurance plan for your child. Student accident insurance can help you manage the possibility of out-of-pocket expenses, since many group insurance policies no longer pay full hospital and medical expenses and may require a deductible or co-insurance.
Vacation
Planning a trip? If you are planning to take a trip when school is in session, make sure to fill out the district's vacation form at least three days in advance.
Volunteering
Throughout the year, there will be opportunities for parents to volunteer in second grade! In order to volunteer in the classroom, you need to have your clearances.
