📘 What Is REWARDS Science and Social Studies?
REWARDS is a reading and writing intervention program designed to help students in grades 4–12 succeed in science and social studies. It provides explicit instruction in key literacy skills that support reading comprehension and academic writing using real content-area texts.

🔍 What Skills Do Students Strengthen?

1. Multisyllabic Word Decoding
Students learn how to break apart long, complex words—often found in textbooks—into manageable parts. This helps them read challenging words like revolutionary, photosynthesis, and governmental with confidence.

2. Vocabulary Development
REWARDS teaches students how to figure out word meanings using prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Students also learn strategies for understanding new academic and subject-specific words.

3. Reading Fluency
Through guided and repeated reading practice, students improve their ability to read accurately, smoothly, and with proper expression—making it easier to understand what they read.

4. Comprehension Strategies
Students practice identifying main ideas, summarizing, making inferences, and answering text-based questions using real science and social studies texts.

5. Academic Writing
REWARDS teaches students how to respond to informational texts with clear, well-organized written answers. Students learn to:

• Explain their thinking using academic language
  These skills are essential for success on classroom assignments and state assessments.

6. Reading to Learn
Most importantly, REWARDS helps students shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” a vital skill in middle and high school. Students gain confidence in reading their textbooks and participating in content-area classes.
