Language Arts

East Penn has adopted the Fountas and Pinnell program for our reading curriculum.  We will utilized a variety of texts, both fiction and non fiction as well as poetry to develop our early reading skills.  We use a balanced literacy approach to reading. This includes shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, and read aloud.

For our phonics and phonemic awareness growth, we are using the Wilson Fundations program. We will be using this program to practice our letter, letter sounds, and word building skills.  This helps prepare students early reading skills to help them read grade level texts.

We also use Heggerty and Fundations to build and strengthen our phonics knowledge!

In writing, we use Lucy Calkins Units of Writing. The students will explore opinion, informational, and narrative writing.  At the beginning of the school year, kindergarteners writing is mostly pictures.  As the school year progresses, letters and words will be added.
