The School Nurse bridges the gap between health care and education. The School Nurse has standards of practice she or he follows and serves to assist the community/ public's health care. School Nursing began in the United States on October 1, 1902, when Lina Rogers, the first School Nurse, was hired to reduce absenteeism by intervening with students and families regarding healthcare needs related to communicable diseases. Since that time School Nursing has continued to grow and significantly expanded to fit the needs of students and their families to aid in student's academic success.
When you think of school, the immediate thought that comes to mind is academics, grades, clubs, ect. But did you know a student's health is directly related to his or her ability to learn? Jocelyn Elders, a Pediatrician, Public Health Administrator, and the former Surgeon General of the United States, once said, " You can't educate a child who isn't healthy and you can't keep a child healthy who isn't educated." The School Nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process. Keeping children healthy, safe, in school, and ready to learn should be top priority for both healthcare and educational systems.
My goal is to be your healthcare advocate and to keep all my student's safe and healthy. As an advocate for the individual student, I will promote the concept of self-management to enable your student with confidence to manage his/her condition while maintaining supervision. Here at Eyer, we are prepared to respond to medical emergencies that may occur during the school day, provide first aid care, and perform state mandated health screenings such as: vision and height and weights for grades 6,7,8. In addition to Scoliosis and hearing for 7th grade students. The care your child will receive is student-centered. We can administer medication and health treatments approved/ordered by your pediatrician.
