Student Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be a valuable tool for learning when it is used responsibly. The district supports the appropriate use of AI to help students learn, think creatively, solve problems, and prepare for college, careers, and life beyond high school. At the same time, AI should support—not replace—student thinking and learning.

Student Expectations

Students are expected to:

• Use AI only when it is permitted by the teacher or assignment directions.

• Follow classroom expectations for when and how AI may be used.

• Use AI as a learning support rather than as a substitute for their own thinking, effort, or creativity.

• Review AI-generated information for accuracy, bias, and completeness.

• Protect their own and others' personal and confidential information.

• Give credit or acknowledge AI assistance when required by the teacher.

• Take responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of work submitted for evaluation.

Appropriate Use of AI

When permitted by a teacher, students may use AI to:

• Brainstorm ideas or generate questions.

• Explain concepts or provide additional practice.

• Organize, outline, or plan ideas.

• Support research and learning.

• Provide language or translation assistance.

• Proofread or provide feedback on student-created work.

• Support creative projects, coding, design, and problem-solving.

• Revise a student's original work while maintaining the student's own ideas, evidence, organization, and voice.

Inappropriate Use of AI

Students may not:

• Submit AI-generated work as their own when independent work is expected.

• Use AI to complete assignments intended to measure their individual knowledge, writing, reasoning, or problem-solving unless specifically authorized.

• Allow AI to replace their own thinking, analysis, or creativity.

• Use AI to cheat, plagiarize, fabricate information, or misrepresent authorship.

• Upload personal, confidential, or protected information into AI tools that are not approved by the district.

• Use AI in a way that violates school or district policies or applicable laws.

Privacy and Security

Students should protect their personal information and the privacy of others when using AI.

Students must not enter information such as:

• Passwords or student identification numbers

• Medical information

• Confidential educational records

• Personally identifiable information

• Another student's work or personal information

Students should use only district-approved AI tools when required by a teacher or when school-related work involves district information.

Academic Integrity

AI use does not change the school's expectations for academic honesty. Students must submit work that authentically represents their own learning.

Unauthorized use of AI may be considered cheating, plagiarism, or another violation of the Student Code of Conduct and may result in academic or disciplinary consequences consistent with district policy.

Teachers may require students to provide evidence of their writing or work process and may use appropriate tools or other methods to identify unauthorized AI use.

Learning About AI

Students will have opportunities to develop AI literacy, including how to:

• Use AI ethically and responsibly.

• Recognize the strengths and limitations of AI.

• Identify inaccurate, misleading, or biased information.

• Verify information using reliable sources.

• Protect personal privacy and digital identity.

• Use AI while maintaining academic honesty and personal responsibility.

Teacher Direction Matters

AI expectations may vary by class, assignment, and learning activity. The teacher's directions determine whether AI is permitted, limited, or prohibited for a particular assignment.

When in doubt, ask your teacher before using AI.

The district will continue to review and update AI expectations as technology, educational practices, and legal requirements evolve.
