Please check out these helpful hints and tips to keep your student's Chromebook running.
Loaners
Birchland Park has a limited number of loaner Chromebooks that may be available in the office.
In order to borrow a Chromebook, students must leave either their school ID or something of value (cell phone, etc.) in the office. This item will be returned to the student when the Chromebook is returned to the office. Chromebooks are only loaned out for the school day and must be returned by 1:45 pm. They are not to leave the building.
Performing a Hard Reset
Most of the time a hard reset will fix the chromebook - including when it seems like the chromebook will not turn on.
Step 1: Hold down [esc] + [refresh] + [power] at the same time. This will force restart the chromebook.
Step 2: Once the chromebook restarts, a message will appear on the screen that says, "Please insert a recovery USB stick or SD card". Press the power button to turn the chromebook off. Then press the power button again to turn it back on.
Updating your Chromebook
Many times when your Chromebook is not functioning properly or running things the way it usually does, it means you need an update. When your computer is up to date and has been restarted, it will run more smoothly.
At the bottom of the screen, click on your battery icon.
Select the gear icon from the menu that opens.
Select "about Chrome OS" on the left. Then choose "check for updates" in the middle. When done, restart your computer.
Resolving Common Keyboard Issues
On the sign in screen, click where the time is located in the bottom right corner.
A small window will pop up. One of the settings options is for the keyboard. This must be set to "US" (English).
A common issue encountered by our office staff is the keyboard either does not type certain letters/numbers or it types the wrong letters/numbers. This is often resolved by making sure the correct keyboard input is selected.
Contacting the Helpdesk
If your Chromebook issue can not be resolved with a hard reset or keyboard reset, a help ticket can be submitted to IT via email. The email address is: helpdesk@eastlongmeadowma.gov
In the subject line, enter the student's first and last name and the word Chromebook. (For example: Jessica Kennedy Chromebook). In the body of the email write a brief description of the problem.
IT will either reply with a way to fix the problem or advise the student to bring the Chromebook to the office to be sent for repairs.
Chromebook Insurance
Chromebook insurance can be purchased or renewed online. Visit the East Longmeadow Portal on the Unipay website for more information or to purchase/renew coverage.
The current fee schedule per student is:
