Homework Information
Reading:
Once we begin reading our class novels, students will typically have homework 3 - 4 nights per week. Depending on scheduling, class pacing, etc. this may vary. Please check in with HABs nightly.
Each night’s assignment is about 10 pages of reading plus a response to a provided higher-order thinking question.
The question for each night will be given in class and also posted on Google Classroom. Students will be provided a sticky note for their response. If the sticky note is lost, students may respond on any paper.
In order to receive credit for their homework, students must provide a complete response to all parts of the higher order thinking question for that night. If students do not complete the written response, they will not receive credit for their homework.
Students will be provided time in class each day to copy the homework question for that night and a virtual version of the question is also provided on Google Classroom. All students will be aware how to access their homework.
Writing:
Writing homework is rare and typically involves finishing classwork, revising a piece, or practicing a skill.
All writing must be original and completed independently. Help from parents, siblings, AI tools, or others is not allowed.
i- Ready:
Students will be required to complete a minimum of 30 minutes on their individual i - Ready path every week.
Each week, will be provided 30 minutes of in-class i - Ready time in order to help them reach their required weekly minutes. If a student is absent or misses their in-class i - Ready time for any reason, they may work on their path at home. If students make effective use of their given class time, i - Ready should not ever need to become homework.
6C homeroom students will also be provided time each week during morning homeroom to "catch up" on any missing i - Ready minutes for the week.
It is the responsibility of the student to reach their 30 minutes each week regardless of how much class time is provided to them.
Homework Grading Policy
In general students will receive two homework grades per week which will each count as a "Supportive Assignment" grade (see Grading Policy Tab). Depending on class pacing, district schedules, etc. this may vary slightly.
Reading: Effort and completeness are graded more than correctness. If I can tell your child did the reading and tried their best on the homework question, they will receive full credit for their homework that night. Every 3 - 4 reading assignments, students will receive a homework grade (approximately a week's worth of homework), which will average together all the nights of homework.
Parent Contact and Consequences
If students do not complete a homework assignment, they will be given the option to stay in during recess the following school day to complete their missing assignment for partial credit. If students choose to complete the missing homework assignment, they will receive a "92" for their homework grade that day. If students do not choose to make it up, they will receive a "0". I will not chase students down for homework assignments. If they choose not to make it up, that is their decision. This mindset is designed to encourage student responsibility for their learning.
Help with Homework
Homework is designed for me to see what students are grasping in class. If you find your child is really struggling with homework assignments, please write me a note in their HAB or send me an email, so I can support them with it in class. A productive struggle is a good thing, but my homework is not designed to take students hours to complete.
I purposely grade homework based on effort and not correctness. I learn a lot from the answers students get wrong, so please allow your child to complete their homework as independently as possible.
