1. Written assignment: watch a film or play and describe what you think about it - is it good
or bad, interesting, funny, boring, exciting - reflect on why it might be these things. Also
reflect on the acting of the central actors - and talk about their skill levels, artistry - and
what makes a good actor. [one side of A4 - a couple of paragraphs only]
2. Find a new work of art - engage with it - and be prepared to tell us about it - something
that is new to you - a painting, a sculpture, a song, a play, a film, a Musical, a book etc
3. Try a new form of exercise - and tell us about how it went - could be yoga, swimming,
walking, running, cycling, tennis, calisthenics, basketball etc
4. Take a walk in nature - and pay attention to what you see and hear - slow down, walk in
silence, and connect with nature. This is good for the mind and body, and also develops
our ability to be quiet, still, and to pay attention - all great skills for actors
5. Learn the Shakespeare speech below. Don’t act it. Just say the words clearly and slowly
and let the images resonate. Maybe look into the play/context from which it comes. The
important thing here is being able to learn lines, to feel comfortable speaking poetry, and
to work at challenging things.
When we start in September I’ll get you all to share your tasks with the group - and to recite the
speech to the group [remember I’m less interested in your acting - and only interested in your
having learnt it - and ability to speak it to us!]
All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms;
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation

Find a book, TV show or film that you feel should be adapted into a play (actors), musical (MT students) or a dance piece (dancers).
Create a presentation giving a summary of your chosen book, TV show or film. Why do you feel that this would translate well to stage?
Make sure to include the following in your presentation:
An inspiration board that captures the mood and feel of the show
A few famous actors (or dancers) that you would cast as main characters and why?
Who would you choose to direct or choreograph this stage production and why?
What music would be used in this piece? Find a few songs that you would want to be used in it
Describe the production, what kind of space do you see it being performed in? What type of audience is this intended for?
You will present this to your class during Tutorial when we start in September
