Nature Conservation

Data driven conservation from the ground to the cloud

Biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate. According to the WWF Living Planet report, wildlife populations have fallen on average 58% since the 1970s and we expect to lose two-thirds of our wildlife by 2020. Nature and biodiversity are in peril, and technology can be one of the revolutionary tools to help us gain a better understanding of where species are declining and how to protect them and the habitats they rely upon.

At this workshop we will hold sessions on the use of satellite imagery analysis using Google Earth Engine, storytelling using maps and field data collection tools.

Who should attend for the Conservation track? Ideal participants:

  • Work with satellite remote sensing data to study conservation planning and are looking to scale up analyses to larger areas or time series to have increased impact.
  • Focus on storytelling using maps to engage new audiences and educate young people about biodiversity.
  • Run field data collection projects.
  • Are interested in multi-organization collaborations to address conservation issues.
  • Are interested in open data, open science, and open source development practices.
