In Latin V & VI Advanced, we continue your adventure into the realm of the Classics. This is a Post-AP class, so the material will be challenging but nothing that you cannot handle. You will also have a say in what we study, who we read, and how you will demonstrate your knowledge. Returning again this year, is the Genius Hour Project so you have a chance to really dig into something that interests you & to make something worth sharing. For more on Genius Hour, see the link below the class syllabus. As you near the end of your high school journey through the classics, you will have gained many invaluable skills and insights for your journey beyond the grounds of Westlake.
You also have the opportunity to connect, compete, and network with other scholars, locally and globally, through membership in the Westlake Latin Club and JCL again this year. We are funding our scholarships through working Concessions at the Football games (Home and Away sides) again this year, so we will need all hands on deck and as many volunteers as we can get! Parent help is needed for registers, and students are needed as runners and everything else. It is an opportunity to fund our scholarships AND you will get a golden ticket for each shift you (and your parents) work to help out. Read more about it and sign up to help in the club's google classroom.
your school-issued iPad: updated, working, and charged for our daily use
a Latin folder/spiral/organizer (pick what works best for you) for class & digital workflow organization
paper, pens & pencils, and colorful highlighters (yellow, pink, green, blue, orange, purple)
personal/library resources for your current work/research and any shared/distributed class materials
dry erase marker(s) for your personal use on the hanging whiteboards
2 boxes of kleenex (please- bring 2 @ the start of each semester)
Optional: I keep an Amazon wishlist for extras for the classroom here
At times, other supplies like markers, colored pencils, craft supplies, etc. may also be required and advanced notice will be given in class for anything that I cannot supply for the class. Certain Apps and Home Screen “Links” on your iPad may also be required, as needed. You may opt to bring your own USB-to-Lightning charging cable for personal use at the class charging stations.
A class set of textbooks (Latin for the New Millennium, Level 3) will remain in the classroom and will be used as needed. If a book is damaged or missing, the student who caused the damage or lost the book must pay for its replacement.
Our week's work will be written on the front whiteboard in the classroom, and the google doc Latin Lesson Calendar is linked HERE. This is a living document that will be updated as changes occur through out the semester, and all changes will be announced in class and updated on the side board as well.
The Lesson Calendar lists what we do in class every day (projects, class work, etc.), when we have quizzes and tests, when we have projects, what the homework is, and it also includes schedule details like Pep Rallies, State/AP Testing Days, Early Release Days, Exam Schedules, and No Homework nights, etc. so it is a pretty useful resource.
Westlake High School utilizes Google Classroom to share resources, most assignments, and assessment preparation materials to students. WHS students will receive a classroom code to access these materials, submit assignments, and track any missing work. Join code shared in class.
