English I

Course Overview

This English I course engages students in developing foundational language skills across listening, speaking, reading, writing, and critical thinking through the seven integrated strands of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Students will explore a variety of complex texts and genres, analyze literary elements and author’s craft, and build vocabulary and comprehension strategies. Emphasis is placed on effective communication, academic conversations, and the writing process, including composing literary, informational, and argumentative texts. The course also supports English Language Learners with strategic scaffolds to ensure language proficiency and academic success. 

Required Class Materials

Students should bring the following materials to class every day to stay organized and ready to learn. Having these essentials helps students participate actively and keep up with classwork smoothly.

• a notebook or binder for notes and assignments

• pens / pencils

• Independent reading book & other required reading materials

• homework or completed assignments

• planner to track important dates

• fully charged iPad

• writing journal
