Invitation
Eligible sophomores and juniors will receive an invitation to fill out the candidate form in their school email during the Spring semester. Eligible juniors and seniors will also receive invitations during the Fall semester. They will have about a month to complete and submit the candidate form.
Candidate Form
The Candidate Form is the application for NHS. Applicants will fill out the 5 page spreadsheet, demonstrating the 4 pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
To show Scholarship, a prospective member must have a weighted GPA of a 94.5 or better.
To show Service, one must be able to show evidence of at least 32 hours of service to the Eanes and greater Austin community. These hours will need to be logged and submitted to the Chaps in Service program that is run by the counseling office. Information on the Chaps in Service program can be found on the Westlake Counseling Website. If you have questions about submitting Chaps in Service hours or whether or not your volunteer hours can count as Chaps in Service hours, please reach out to your counselor or Chaps in Service directly using this email.
To show Leadership, a prospective member must present an example of a role of leadership in another organization. This portion of the candidate form will require a description of the responsibilities of your leadership position. This description should explain how your responsibilities demonstrate that you have met the leadership pillar, as defined by National Honor Society. To see how NHS defines leadership, check their website.
To show Character, a prospective member will need to show evidence of positive involvement in the Eanes and Austin community through participation in extracurricular activities and submit a letter of recommendation from an organization or activity sponsor.
Acceptance
New members will be notified of their acceptance in the late Spring. At this time they will receive information on the induction ceremony that is held in May. Following induction, they are full members of NHS and can start participating in NHS volunteer oppurtunities
