Q: WHEN CAN I FIRST GET INTO NHS?
A: Per the NASSP and chapter bylaws – Candidates will first be considered for membership after completing one semester of course work after their freshman year. This means that the first opportunity for membership in the spring semester of their sophomore year.
Q: WHY ARE FRESHMEN INELIGIBLE FOR NHS?
A: Per the NASSP – Ninth graders cannot be members of NHS, as NJHS is designed for students in grades 6-9. This does mean that students coming from a middle school (6–8) with an NJHS chapter will have one year when they will be active in neither an NHS nor an NJHS chapter. In the opinion of the founding officers of NHS, ninth graders need to focus on making a smooth transition from middle school to high school, establishing a firm academic foundation and “learning the ropes,” and should not be encumbered with the pressures of selection procedures.
Q: I WAS A PART OF NJHS AND NEHS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. DOES THAT AUTOMATICALLY GET ME INTO NHS?
A: Per the NASSP – No. The National Junior Honor Society and the National Honor Society are separate societies, both at the local and national level. Members of the National Junior Honor Society must be selected for membership in the National Honor Society in the same manner as all other candidates at the school.
Q: HOW WILL I KNOW THAT I AM INVITED?
A: Candidates for membership will receive an invitation to complete a candidate form via an email to their school email address.
Q: DOES AN INVITATION MEAN I WILL BE A MEMBER?
A: No. An invitation does not mean automatic membership, and there is no right to membership, it is a privilege bestowed upon a student by the faculty of the school. Your candidate form will be reviewed by a council of faculty members and students who meet the organization’s pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character will be admitted.
Q: IS THERE A QUOTA OR CUTOFF FOR NHS CLASS SIZES?
A: Per the NASSP – No. Quotas or percentages may not be set to limit membership or chapter size.
Q: WHY IS THE GPA REQUIREMENT SO HIGH?
A: Per the NASSP – Membership is open to students who have completed one semester of coursework after their freshman year and who have a cumulative scholastic average of 85 percent, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), or the equivalent standard of excellence. Individual schools may require a higher cumulative GPA if it becomes necessary to limit chapter size.
Q: WHEN AND HOW WILL I FIND OUT THAT I GOT IN?
A: New members will be notified of their acceptance in the late Spring. At this time they will receive information on the induction ceremony that is held in May. Following induction, they are full members of NHS and can start participating in NHS sponsored projects.
Q: WHEN DO I PAY MY DUES? HOW MUCH ARE DUES?
A: Member dues are collected through skyward. These will be added to your skyward fees in the first semester following your induction (ie. if you are inducted in the spring, they will appear in your fall fees list). Your membership dues are a one time $40 payment and are used to cover induction materials, NASSP affiliation fees, and NHS shirts.
Senior members who have completed the graduation requirements to earn a stole will need to pay an additional $15 to cover the cost and shipping of the stole.
Q: WHAT IF I AM NOT ACCEPTED INTO NHS?
A: If you are not accepted into NHS, it is okay. In the week following your non-acceptance decision you will have an opportunity to appeal your decision. The instructions for the appeal process will be sent to you via google classroom. If you choose not to appeal your non-acceptance decision or your status does not change following your appeal, there will be future opportunities to join NHS. Please note that per the NASSP – the national office staff and NASSP have no authority to review or overturn the judgment of the faculty council regarding selection of individual members to local chapters.

A: Yes. After the spring semester of your sophomore year there will be additional opportunities for membership into NHS each semester. Candidate forms will be available in the fall for Juniors and Seniors who meet the GPA requirement and then available in the spring for Juniors who meet the GPA requirement.
