Eanes ISD AI Guidelines
In alignment with the district's mission to unite our community, empower students, and inspire purposeful lives, this guideline outlines the appropriate use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies by students and staff in Eanes ISD. Teachers are encouraged to use AI tools to transform instructional opportunities, while fostering students’ understanding and responsible use of AI technologies. The goal of the district is to ensure AI is used responsibly, ethically, and effectively to enhance teaching and learning while protecting privacy and academic integrity.
What is AI?
Artificial intelligence refers to computer systems designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognizing patterns, and making decisions. AI-powered tools can assist teachers in creating dynamic lesson plans, providing feedback, and facilitating differentiated instruction while also saving time by streamlining routine tasks. AI encompasses various categories, each with unique capabilities that can enhance education. Machine Learning (ML) enables AI systems to learn from data, improving their performance over time without explicit programming - a feature used in adaptive learning platforms that adjust to individual student needs. Natural Language Processing (NLP) allows AI to interpret and respond to human language, powering tools like chatbots for student inquiries and automated grading and feedback. Computer Vision (CV), another branch of AI, can analyze images and videos, which is used in applications such as virtual labs or assisting with classroom safety monitoring. Eanes ISD believes in the potential of AI to enhance the overall teaching and learning experience.
Guiding Principles
Educational Enhancement
AI should be used to support teaching, learning, and operational efficiency in alignment with our district’s educational goals. It must not be used to replace critical thinking, creativity, or human judgment. Educators and students are encouraged to view AI as a collaborative tool that augments, rather than substitutes, the personalized and innovative learning experience.
Ethical Use
Users who engage with AI tools should do so in a manner that upholds ethical standards, including respect for others' work, data privacy, and intellectual property. This includes adhering to district-approved resources, ensuring proper citations of AI-generated content, and fostering a culture of academic integrity.
Transparency
When a teacher allows students to utilize AI, or teachers use AI to generate content, users should be transparent about its role and contribution. Teachers should model this practice by explicitly identifying how AI was used in lesson preparation or assessments, setting a standard for students to follow.
STUDENTS
Eanes ISD is excited to introduce AI tools that can help students learn in new and personalized ways, making studying and completing assignments more engaging. Responsible use of AI ensures it transforms learning while respecting academic integrity and transparency of its use. Through thoughtful
implementation, AI can enhance both academic and personal growth, aligning with the district's commitment to success for all students and fostering a future-ready generation.
AI Usage Guidelines for Students
Academic Integrity
Students must use AI responsibly. While AI tools may assist in learning and completing assignments, students are prohibited from using AI to generate complete projects, essays, or exam responses unless specifically approved by a teacher. Misuse of AI will result in disciplinary actions according to the Student Code of Conduct.
Learning Support
Students are encouraged to use AI as a tool for personalized learning (e.g., tutoring platforms, writing support), but they should always consult teachers for clarification and guidance. Students are encouraged to use AI to seek understanding of concepts, and not just find the answers to questions.
Transparency in AI Use
When a teacher allows students to utilize AI, and the AI tools are used to aid in the completion of an assignment, students must acknowledge its usage and the extent of its contribution similar to how they would cite traditional sources. Here’s a recommended format for citing AI in academic work:
1. In-Text Citation: Mention the use of the AI tool within the body of the work where it contributed. Example: “This analysis was assisted by [AI Tool Name], an AI-powered platform (Company Name, Year).”
2. Full Citation (in bibliography or reference section): Include a full citation that lists the AI tool, version (if applicable), the company, and the date accessed or used. Example:
(APA style) Company Name. (Year). AI Tool Name (Version X.X). URL
(MLA style) Company Name. AI Tool Name, Version X.X, Year, URL.
3. Note the Role of AI: Specify how the AI was used, whether for generating ideas, summarizing, editing, or any other assistance. Example:
"The AI tool was used for generating a draft summary, which was later revised and finalized by the student."
