Family and Consumer Sciences Syllabus
This course will cover 7 units:
`1. Fashion and Sewing, 2. Childhood Development, 3. Interior Design, 4. Career Exploration, 5. Financial Literacy, 6. Food Science, and 7. Nutrition and Wellness
Food Science will be covered on Friday Kitchen labs.
Weekly "traditional" formative assessments will be administered to track student mastery and understanding following these labs, while the remaining 6 of these units will involve a summative hands-on project, to be worked on during dedicated class time.
Additionally, students will have 4 formative independent projects that must be worked on in class, after the day’s regularly scheduled assignments have been completed.
Video games, phones, and off-task behavior will result in loss of Friday kitchen privileges.
Schedule:
Fashion and Sewing
Intro to hand-sewing: Threading and knotting, sewing a button, basting stitch, running stitch, back stitch, blanket stitch
2 In-class projects: Mini Pillow and Plushie
Independent project: Apron
Food Science
Kitchen Safety
Knife safety
Fire safety
Intro to cooking and baking using stovetops and ovens
Friday kitchen challenges and weekly assessments
Childhood Development
Early developmental and educational milestones
Car seat safety
Common allergies and epipen administration
Emergency Response Demo: CPR, Heimlich, and defibrillators
