7th Grade Math

7th Grade Math Overview

In my class, we are "Mathletes". We will be working out the brain daily while doing šŸ’”Thinking Tasks and šŸ› ļø Workshops. This will look like an engaging learning environment where students work collaboratively to grapple with mathematical tasks that require both critical and creative thinking. Preparing students for life means developing competent thinkers that are resilient, collaborative, and strong communicators. A Thinking Classroom specifically identifies key competencies to develop in mathematics and the goal is for students to be able to explain and justify, reason and model, visualize, make connections, and more. The Thinking Classroom also helps students to become sophisticated with a variety of habits, mindsets, and approaches, to gain the confidence to use them, and the resilience to persevere.

The primary focal areas in Grade 7 are numbers and operations; proportionality; expressions, equations, and relationships; and measurement and data. Students use concepts, algorithms, and properties of rational numbers to explore mathematical relationships and to describe increasingly complex situations. Students use concepts of proportionality to explore, develop, and communicate mathematical relationships, including numbers, geometry and measurement, and statistics and probability. Students use algebraic thinking to describe how a change in one quantity in a relationship results in a change in the other. Students connect verbal, numeric, graphic, and symbolic representations of relationships, including equations and inequalities. Students use geometric properties and relationships, as well as spatial reasoning, to model and analyze situations and solve problems. Students communicate information about geometric figures or situations by quantifying attributes, generalizing procedures from measurement experiences, and using the procedures to solve problems. Students use appropriate statistics, representations of data, and reasoning to conclude, evaluate arguments, and make recommendations. While the use of all types of technology is important, the emphasis on algebra readiness skills necessitates the implementation of graphing technology.
