ELA 6th Grade

ELA Course Overview

In sixth grade language arts, we expect all students to come to class

with the required supplies, to be attentive and respectful to the teacher and other

students, to be responsible with school property, class work, and homework, and

to follow directions. This class is a 51-minute class focusing on: reading

comprehension, vocabulary, the writing process, and literary analysis. We focus on reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking.

Tips for parents

  • Encourage your child to advocate for themselves. Have them talk to their teachers if they have a question or if there is an issue.

  • Help your child with organization. They now have eight classes and eight teachers which is very different from elementary school.

  • Coach – don’t write – for your child. Question, listen, and talk about writing together.

  • When working with your child, focus on ideas and content first. Save editing until the ideas are clear, complete, and focused.

  • Read aloud to your children – no matter the age. Discuss good examples of writing from newspapers, magazines, poetry, descriptions from travel brochures, and instructions on toys and games.

  • Let your child SEE you read and write. Read the same book your child is reading and talk about the book.

  • Book discussions. Just as in reading when you discuss the story with your child, discuss how the Author wrote the story. How did they begin? How did they end the story? What kept your interest?

  • Read, read, read! Better readers make better writers!

  • Lastly, monitor their social media and communications, especially if your child has a phone. Use the available Parent Controls or Parent Blocking apps.
