To learn more about SBATs visit pages 58 - 59 of the 'HSC Course Selection Handbook'.
A School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) allows students to start a trade or traineeship while still at school, combining paid work, vocational training, and HSC studies.
Why Choose an SBAT?
Gain a nationally recognised VET qualification
Earn while you learn with paid, part-time employment
Complete your HSC (and potentially contribute to your ATAR with some courses)
Develop real-world skills and experience
Apprenticeships
5-year training contract (2 years part-time at school + 3 years full-time post-school)
Certificate III qualification (e.g. Automotive, Construction, Electrotechnology)
Typically: 1 day TAFE + 1 day work + 3 days school per week
Minimum 100–180 paid work days by end of Year 12
Traineeships
2-year contract (or until training is complete)
Certificate II or III qualification (e.g. Business, IT, Aged Care, Allied Health)
Minimum 100 paid work days
Often more flexible and may occur outside school hours
How It Works
SBATs count for 2–4 HSC units
Structure may include weekly work, training, and extra hours in holidays
Strong time management and independence are essential
Important to Know
Students must secure their own employer - often through family or community
Speak with Mr Ben McRae (Pathways & Partnerships) or Mrs Guest (Graduate Preparation) to get started
Applications are reviewed by the College and require Director of Teaching & Learning approval
Commitment is crucial - non-completion may affect your HSC eligibility
