College Tests: SAT/ACT

The SAT and ACT are nationally recognized standardized tests used by many colleges and universities in the United States to help make admissions decisions.

These tests are designed to measure a student’s readiness for college-level coursework and to provide colleges with a common data point for comparing applicants from different high schools.

Note for families: Today, many colleges have become "test-optional," meaning students can choose whether to submit their SAT or ACT scores as part of their application.

How They Differ: While all U.S. colleges accept both tests equally, they are structured a bit differently:

• The SAT: Focuses deeply on Reading, Writing, and Math. 

• The ACT: Covers English, Math, and Reading, but also includes a dedicated Science reasoning section.

You might hear that some students do better on one test than the other.  For this reason, many students take both tests.
