NYS Model Schools staff share what we learned in classrooms by presenting a Poster session at NYSCATE 2019 about Low-Tech maker tools - straws and cardboard (with a happy participant!)
Here, students are benefiting from targeted practice on their phonics skills using the Freckle app. Their teacher uses Apple Classroom to auto-launch the app on their iPads and monitor progress.
Shake it up! Survey your students and you probably won't be surprised to find that they DON'T use pen and paper at home. So, why do we insist on paper and pencil assessments? Could your students create a video of themselves explaining the new content and applications? How about creating and curating a digital portfolio of resources and projects throughout the year? Have them track their own growth and progress by setting goals and benchmarks for their own learning. Specifics on any of these can be found on the internet or Twitter Professional Learning Networks (PLNs). While you are shaking it up, be sure that you're focused on the "Learning First, Technology Second" (The book by Liz Kolb is a fantastic read with applicable examples and inspiring ideas to shake it up!)
How are YOU making a difference in your students' education?
