Cocoon Exhibition Narrative
Life is inherently equal, but the circumstances of birth often reflect the whims of fate. Some babies are abandoned during birth, left unclaimed and without love. They are grown up without love and unable to experience a wonderful life, like a butterfly missed the opportunity of emerging itself from a cocoon. An invisible pair of scissors cuts through the cocoon, thrusting these unwanted babies into a world filled with trauma and uncertainty. The broken cocoon symbolizes the failure of societal resources and goodwill to support the new life.
We named the exhibition "Cocoon" to represent the phenomenon of abandoned babies. Our aim is to unravel the complex threads behind the issue of baby abandonment and understand the root cause. We strive to explore various perspectives and demonstrate our deep respect for life.
The broken cocoon represents the abandoned babies, their parents, and the fragmented social safety net. We cordially invite you to join us and walk through the Cocoon exhibition, to contemplate the possibilities for healing and restoration.
Map of Abandoned Baby
According to data from the Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM), there were 945 documented cases of abandoned babies between 2010 and 2018. There may be more cases that have not been discovered. We have compiled PDRM data, screened the 10 most common locations where abandoned babies are found, and recreated these scenes with representative objects from each location.
Unplanned Pregnancy Guide
The lack of sex education is one of the reasons for unintended pregnancies and the issue of abandoned babies. By presenting content on sex education, this exhibit aims to provide practical information to help visitors understand sex education from various aspects, including pregnancy signs and contraception methods.
Cocoon Art Installation
In line with our exhibition's theme "Cocoon", we have created a large-scale art installation that mimics a broken cocoon using cotton thread and cotton. When visitors step inside the cocoon, they are invited to experience the perspective of a baby. This installation aims to address the issue of abandoned babies in an artistic and gentle manner.
Hatch Simulation
The baby hatch originated from the "foundling wheel" in medieval Europe, initially set up by churches to receive abandoned babies. With technological advancements, the foundling wheel was replaced by safer, more anonymous baby hatches in the 19th century and became widely used across various countries by the 1950s. In 2008, the local NGO "OrphanCare Foundation" introduced baby hatches to Malaysia.
Adoption Process
The causes of child abandonment are complex, and fully addressing this issue is no easy task. Adoption is one of the key solutions promoted by many countries. Regardless of their background, every child deserves a home.

Malaysia Historical Birth Certificate
A birth certificate is the legal proof of citizenship, confirming the relationship between a child and their parents. However, for abandoned babies, this document is not to be taken for granted. We have traced the history of birth certificates in Malaysia, offering insights through a historical lens.
