"Cocoon" Calls for Public Awareness on Abandoned Babies
KUALA LUMPUR: Third-year students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Chinese Media and Communication Studies from the Department of Media Studies at New Era University College are hosting a three-day graduation exhibition themed "Cocoon", focusing on the topic of abandoned babies, aims to provoke deep reflection among visitors and foster empathy through its various displays.
The exhibition is open from 11 AM to 8 PM at the GMBB, a cultural and creative community mall in Bukit Bintang. The official opening of the exhibition took place on August 16th at 2 PM, with ADUN of Balakong, YB Wayne Ong Chun Wei, as the guest of honor.
The "Cocoon" exhibition has received support from the MP for Bukit Bintang, the ADUN of Balakong, the GMBB creative community mall, and the Little Giraffe Story House. It has also been sponsored by various organizations, such as Sperwin Corporation SDN BHD, SHT Setia Hardware SDN BHD, Kobewel Kogyo Gases SDN BHD, and Ggman Agricultural SDN BHD.
Kon Zi Yee: Aiming to Provide a Platform for Dialogue
Kon Zi Yee, the Project Manager of the "Cocoon" exhibition, explained that the name "Cocoon" was chosen because abandoned babies are like cocoons that are cut off before they have the chance to become butterflies. These babies' lives shouldn't be labeled solely with negative tags. This inspired they to explore the issue of abandoned babies, hoping to create a platform for dialogue that connects the public with social issues.
She also mentioned that although it was challenging and regrettable not to find individuals directly affected by the issue, they took a different approach by observing the phenomenon of abandoned babies from the perspective of bystanders, including nonprofit organizations running baby hatches, religious leaders, lawyers, and politicians. Kon Zi Yee hopes that the content they gathered and presented will highlight the value of every life.
Joe Liaw Siau Chi: Making people empathize with social issues
Dr. Joe Liaw Siau Chi, Faculty of Communication, Cinematic and Performing Arts at New Era University College, stated that the cross-media project course has been conducted several times. Each time, students are required to step into the field and deeply explore different topics. Throughout this process, they encounter diverse perspectives that challenge their worldview and correct their biases. As they delve into the deeper layers of society, students often discover that various issues are intertwined with political, judicial, and livelihood aspects. It is precisely these complex interconnections that gave rise to the "Cocoon" exhibition.
Dr. Liao also shared that he has previously dealt with issues related to marginalized communities, and the most challenging part was transforming serious topics into content that readers can empathize with. He admires the students for their willingness to explore sensitive issues like abandonment and sexuality, and to critically examine the shortcomings of existing mechanisms in the country.
YB Wayne Ong Chun Wei: Addressing the issue of abandoned babies requires social reform
ADUN of Balakong YB Wayne Ong Chun Wei emphasized the importance of addressing the issues of abandoned babies and stateless children, urging society to collectively focus on and resolve these problems.
Wong highlighted that both issues reflect shortcomings in social identity, legal protection, and societal acceptance. He shared his experiences in addressing the challenges faced by stateless children, stressing the critical importance of citizenship for every individual.
Wong believes that tackling the issue of abandoned babies requires addressing fundamental societal structural problems, such as providing comprehensive sex education, better social welfare, support for single-parent families, eliminating gender discrimination, and reforming relevant laws to ensure that every newborn has a legal identity.
He called on the government, social organizations, businesses, and the public to work together to create a more inclusive, understanding, and supportive environment for these children. He also pledged to continue advocating for the issues of stateless children and abandoned babies to improve their circumstances.
Diverse Experiences Present the Issue of Abandoned Babies
After the opening ceremony, Kon Zi Yee guided the guests through the exhibition. The exhibition features multiple sections, including a simulation of a baby hatch, exhibits of common locations where babies are abandoned, a story corridor, an interactive Q&A area, a slogan wall, and a reading area. Each section is designed to engage visitors in a multifaceted exploration of the issue.
Additionally, the organizers have published a special zine titled "Cocoon", which shares the same name as the exhibition. This independently produced zine compiles stories and insights gathered during the curation process, offering visitors a deeper content experience. The zine is intended not only to enrich the exhibition but also to continue to have an impact after the exhibition concludes.
