Homework

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the new school year! Homework is an activity for practice for skills we are reviewing in class. Please do not use this additional practice as punishment. We want our children to feel successful and if at any point you see frustration, STOP. Change the activity or talk about what they want to do or what change might make it fun.

There is no greater reward than to see students make advancement in their reading skills.

I send home a monthly calendar that is for your child to color a day they read outloud to a grownup or their pet, or they practiced their sight words, or they did some type of reading game. This can include watching a show and retelling that show in order of events *(sequencing) to you. All of those ideas and more count.

At the end of the month, they return their calendar for a prize. It is that easy! We want to help your child by making reading FUN! This can also include any homework they are already doing for their homeroom class. Even answering the fun questions or doing the activities on the calendar goes toward being able to color that day!

Your child will also bring home a list of sight words. I encourage families to only focus on a few at a time and never worry about perfection. Repetition is best, various modalities, and fun ways to learn. Even 2nd and 3rd graders enjoy the letter magnets! These activities also count toward learning through play for the monthly calendar prize.

That is it! That is the only "homework" for reading intervention that I send home regularly. If you would like additional resources on the Phoenemic Awareness or Phonics skills we are learning in class, I am always happy to send them home for you.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Email is usually the best way to reach me.

Thank you,

Mrs. Schultz
