Located in Yongkang District, adjacent to Tainan City’s East District, the Dawan area has experienced rapid growth and prosperity. In response to increasing local demand and with the strong advocacy of Provincial Councilor Mr. Hsieh Chun-Hui and community leaders, the Tainan County Government, under the directive of the Department of Education, officially established Tainan County Dawan Junior High School on August 1, 1983.
Mr. Ho Ming-Chia was appointed as the school’s first principal. He was succeeded by Mr. Yang Chin-Fu in August 1988. Upon Principal Yang’s retirement on August 1, 1992, Mr. Chung Chiu-Chen assumed the position as the third principal on August 28 of the same year. On September 8, 1995, Mr. Chuang Ming-Jen took over as the fourth principal. Following Principal Chuang’s transfer to Yong-Ren Senior High School on August 1, 2005, Mr. Hsu Ming-Ta was appointed as the fifth principal by the school’s selection committee.
After Principal Hsu’s retirement on August 1, 2013, Mr. Yang Ching-Kuang was selected and appointed as the sixth principal. Two years later, in August 2015, Principal Yang retired and was succeeded by Mr. Yang Li-Chun, who became the school’s seventh principal following a competitive selection process. Most recently, in August 2023, Principal Yang Li-Chun was transferred, and Ms. Lee Yi-Fang was appointed as the eighth principal of the school.
Spanning a total area of 5.4 hectares, the school boasts a well-integrated campus and a serene environment, making it an ideal setting for students to learn and grow. During its founding year, due to the lack of adequate facilities, the school’s initial eight classes temporarily held sessions at nearby Dawan Elementary School. Over the years, thanks to consistent development and expansion, the school has grown into a comprehensive educational institution. As of the 2023–2024 academic year, it comprises 60 classes—18 senior high and 42 junior high—serving approximately 2,000 students with a dedicated team of 170 faculty and staff, in addition to three evening extension classes.
Since its inception, Dawan has continuously evolved under the leadership of its successive principals and the tireless efforts of its faculty and staff. With a shared spirit of dedication and service, the school has consistently enhanced its teaching quality, upgraded its facilities, beautified its campus, and promoted educational excellence. In the 1997–1998 academic year, the school was officially upgraded to Tainan County’s first comprehensive secondary school. It was further restructured into Dawan Senior High School in the 2001–2002 academic year. Following the merger of Tainan County and Tainan City on December 25, 2010, the school was renamed Tainan Municipal Dawan High School.
From 2007 to 2013, the school was recognized for seven consecutive years by the Ministry of Education as a “High-Quality Senior High School,” and in 2013, it earned formal accreditation under the same distinction. This milestone marked a new chapter in the school's educational legacy. In May 2019, the school further distinguished itself by being certified as a Google Reference School, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and excellence in education.
