“Common Core” or 'new' math has been a controversial topic. How I learned math was before machines and the internet were available to do the math procedures for us. My math classes were designed to train me to figure out algorithms, this left little time for real-world applications. I had to become fluid and accurate in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. The world of mathematics has changed with the invention of the internet and the availability of affordable machines to handle math procedures faster and more accurately than a human could.
Students are now being taught strategies to determine reasonable answers. Since machines and tools are available for math procedures, students are allowed more time to apply their knowledge to real-world situations for problem-solving.
