Senior Awards

Downey Unified, in conjunction with City of Downey organizations, are long-time supporters of our graduating seniors. Each year, seniors are granted financial awards to aid in the transition to college. These awardees have not just excelled in the classroom, but have also gone above and beyond in our community.

Bears that receive these prestigious gifts have shown the true spirit of a Warren Bear: grit, character, and citizenship.

Delta Kappa Gamma is an international organization of professional educators. It is dedicated to the advancement of women in the field of education. The Sarah Jamison Scholarship is given in the memory of Sarah Jamison, who taught in the DUSD for 31 years, was a devoted teacher who passionately inspired her students, provided outstanding learning and instilled in them the importance of learning.

Downey Kiwanis Foundation Bennie & Ann Reagan

Bennie and Ann Reagan were longtime residents of Downey, and pursuant to a bequest by their estates, this scholarship was established. This bequest reflects the commitment that both of these stellar citizens had in charitable causes, both locally and nationally. This scholarship is need-based and will be awarded in $3,750 increments over a consecutive four period to a student enrolled full time in a college or university that awards a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. The student will be re-evaluated each year to ensure that the terms of the award are being met.

Downey Kiwanis Foundation - David Bruce Barnes Memorial

David Bruce Barnes was a Warren High graduate in 1962. He was a Northrop Aviation test pilot who was killed in a crash in Goose Bay, Labrador, on May 14, 1985, while making a practice flight to demonstrate the F-20 Tiger Shark in preparation for the 1985 Paris International Air Show. This scholarship was established in order to memorialize David and to recognize those shared qualities that were important to him: dedication to pursuing a chosen education, academic excellence, character, and participation in school and community affairs.

Downey Kiwanis Foundation - Everett Family Memorial Scholarship

Booker and Enid Everett were longtime residents of Downey, and pursuant to a bequest by their estates, these five scholarships were established. This bequest reflects the commitment that both of these stellar citizens had to supporting future small business owners and entrepreneurs. These scholarships are presented to students who have demonstrated a strong interest in pursuing a career in business. These scholarships are awarded in two installments of $5,000 upon supporting documentation that the student is either enrolled in college or is pursuing the development of a small business.

This award was established to honor Donald Ferguson, an Olympic track and field athlete and is given to a graduating senior athlete from Warren High School who excels in track and field.

Spencer Williams was a Downey educator, and this scholarship was established by his daughter in his honor. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Warren High School who previously attended Spencer Williams Elementary School and who intends to further their education after high school.

This award was established in 1996 to honor the memory of Bill who was a past president of the Downey Los Amigos Kiwanis Club. Even though their names may not be widely familiar, many women have made major contributions to science throughout our history – women such as astronomer Caroline Herschel, chemist and Nobel Prize winner Dorothy Hodgkin, NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, and astronaut Sally Ride. The award from Frank and Carol Kearns is made in support of young women who wish to pursue a career in the sciences.

Mike Dowd was a young man who loved science. Since 1965, his parents award a scholarship to a senior who excels in the field of science as a way to commemorate their son Mike.

Since Jeanne Dowd, Mike's mother, passed away, the Jeanne Dowd Memorial Scholarship was created to recognize a senior who excels in the field of biology, chemistry, and engineering.

Mr. Rice began teaching at Warren High School in 1958, teaching chemistry and physics. He was also a counselor and served as president of the Downey Education Association, as well as chairman of the Tri-City Uni-Serve unit. The Leila and Eric Lewis Memorial Scholarship fund awards a scholarship to the most qualified student at either Downey or Warren High School. Risher Mortuary and Cremation

Risher Mortuary has been "family owned" since its establishment in 1959 by Ray and Marge Risher. Barbara Risher Welch along with her husband Greg, have continued the family legacy, dedicating it as their ministry to the bereaved. Second Corinthians 1:4 tells us to "comfort those in their time of sorrow, as God has comforted us in our sorrow". In pursuing their commitment to community and service, The Risher Mortuary "Caring For Others" Scholarship was created to recognize a student with similar values and the pledge to remain dedicated to helping others in need.

Rockview Farms has been conducting business in the city of Downey for decades. In celebration of our 90^th anniversary we began offering a $1,000 scholarship to one senior at both local high schools (Downey and Warren). Since we have been serving the Downey Unified School District with school milk and have fed generations of children, we have called our award the “Raised on Rockview” scholarship.

Downey Sister Cities The Downey Sister Cities Organization was established in 1956. After World War II former President Eisenhower requested cities of different countries and cultures to connect. Downey Sister Cities' main focus is to promote cooperation and engagement with global partners on issues of mutual interest particularly in the areas of education, public safety, and culture. As a nonprofit organization, they have a series of fundraiser events to help pay for trips and supplies to support other cities and each other.

Clubs, regions and the federation recognize and support individuals in their effort toward upward mobility through education.

Vocational Award- awarded to a deserving young lady who will begin her path to success at a 2-year college toward a vocational career. The award is to help offset the costs of education/training toward this vocational career.

TJ Peacock Most Inspirational Athlete Award

TJ Peacock graduated from Warren High School in 2006. TJ made the freshmen baseball team but was unable to play as he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Once he was no longer able to play baseball, TJ focused on golf and eventually become the team captain. Sadly, TJ passed away just 4 days before his 19^th birthday. The TJ Peacock Most Inspirational Athlete Award goes to a student that exemplifies TJ’s determination to persevere through all of life’s challenges.

The United States Navy is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. Recruits will undergo eight weeks of physical, academic and military training in Great Lakes, Illinois to become Sailors.

Warren High School Athlete of the Year

Each year the Warren High School Athletic Department honors one boy and one girl as Athlete of the Year recipient. Each must participate and letter at the varsity level. Coaches’ nominations and subsequent voting within the athletic department select the recipients.

Woman’s Club of Downey Foundation Academic Scholarship was established to honor a high academic student with a minimum of three years of community service. The $4,000 scholarship is paid $1,000 yearly for four years providing the student maintains a 3.0 GPA and a minimum of 32 units per academic year.
