Thrust
Thrust
is force that accelerates an object/mass in a direction.
Rockets use an enormous amount of jet fuel to thrust forward against gravity to launch into space.
For vertical launch of a rocket the initial thrust at
liftoff
must be more than the weight of the craft.
Flying Organisms and Thrust
Thrust is a mechanical force, so the propulsion system must be in physical contact with a
working fluid (air)
to produce thrust.
Flying organisms (birds, bats, and insects) must flap their wings in the air to keep propelling forward.
