Friction
Friction
is the
force
resisting the motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements
sliding
against each other.
There are two main types of friction
:
S
tatic friction and
K
inetic friction
Static friction operates between two surfaces that aren't moving relative to each other.
K
inetic friction acts between objects in motion.
Trains rely on friction between the metal rails and metal wheels in order to move.
Grease, water, and decomposing leaves can reduce the friction between the metal, making the train less efficient.
Mammals and Friction
Many land mammals have textured paws. The texture on the pads of coyotes, dogs, and wolves helps with friction while running without slipping.
