Gravity
Gravity
is the force that attracts a body toward any other physical body having mass.
Systems designed to move people and goods have to either battle or work with the pull of gravity.
Roller coasters fight against gravity when going up the track and work with gravity when coming down.
Coming down the coaster uses less effort than going up!
Fish and Gravity
Many species of fish can resist gravity to swim up in the water by controlling their buoyancy, or their ability to float.
Many fish have an organ in their body (swim bladder) that fills with oxygen allowing them to float or swim up.
Some species don't need a swim bladder.
Rays and sharks
ascend and descend by propelling themselves forward.
Like an
airplane, the movement of fluid under the fins creates
lift
,
which pushes the fish upward.
