Gladbrook.
Like Matarae and Mt Ross, the club has been using this map for many decades. It was first used for the Milo 7 Day in May 1986. Gladbrook was mapped at 1:15,000 by the same team of Swedish mappers who mapped Naseby for APOC 84, and who returned to make this map for the Milo 7 Day. Photogrammetry was by Greg Reed, fieldwork by Kjell Melander, Johan Sandstrom, Gert Jonsson and Don Bruce, and cartography by Kjell Melander and Neil Sutherland. Minor modifications have been made down the decades. LIDAR has not yet been flown for this area.
The scale of maps used by runners for Saturday's event varies according to course (see table below).
NOTE: tracks may look prominent on the maps are but in reality are often obscured by recent grass growth; it is strongly recommended runners "stay in touch" with the map at all times.
Water features (blue) and linear rock ridges can be good handrails on yellow, orange and red courses. There is generally more scrubby vegetation than shown.
Contour interval is 5 m.
Fast, rough open rocky gully/spur terrain dominated by NW-SW trending rock ridges, separated by marshes and indistinct streams. Scattered scrubby vegetation and a few tracks. Grass seeds in socks may prove an annoyance.
No dogs (not even in cars), no smoking nor barbecues.
Whistles must be carried. There is no water on the courses (carry your own).
The Start and Finish are each about 200 m (a three-minute walk) from the caravan.
Runners will start at two minute intervals between 10:45am and 1.15pm. There are no pre-allocated start times so don't all rush at once. There are about 60 runners on each of the medium and long red courses.
Contactless SI Air units can be used
Safety bearing is north (approximately into the sun) then follow fencelines to the assembly area. Report to the caravan.
Course closure is 4.00 pm.
Te warm-up area is anywhere within sight of the car parking and caravan.
The assembly area is in a paddock off Kidds Road, Middlemarch, adjacent to the Sutton Salt Lake Reserve. At Sutton (about 8 km south of Middlemarch), turn west off SH87 onto Kidds Road. Drive for 1.8 km along Kidds Road and turn left onto a farm track through a gate (signposted). Park as directed about 250 m along the track.
If you have time before or after the event, Sutton Salt Lake is worth a visit. Parking for this is inside a signposted gate, 700m further west along Kidds Road
The six-course format and estimated winning times are standard for Dunedin Orienteering OY events, except for the deliberately longer Long Red course (80 mins EWT instead of 60 mins). Start procedures also follow OY events: first come first served between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm, with no allocated start times.
