America in the 60s

Welcome to America in the 1960s!  No decade has had a greater impact on the culture of America than the 1960's. During this decade,  a new awareness of social problems and political inequalities emerged and gave rise to different types of protest movements. Motivated by the conviction that everyday citizens could bring about positive social change, movements and individuals challenged authority.  Topics include the Vietnam War, Presidents JFK, LBJ and Nixon, the Civil Rights Movement, the Anti War Movement, other social movements, the music and the counterculture of the sixties. During the semester, emphasis will be on higher order thinking skills, such as close reading of primary sources and the analysis of pro/con, continuity and change over time, compare and contrast, and point of view.
