Purpose: We offer both mandatory and drop-in tutoring to DUSD students, grades 9-12. Our focus is to review and further explain the curriculum taught in academic classes. With input from our faculty about ongoing tests, projects and assignments, we serve the full range of scholars in all academic areas. In addition to content-area tutoring, we also assist with organization, time-management, and study skills.
We strive to provide everything our students need to complete their assignments: tutoring, chromebooks, printers, textbooks, and a wide variety of school supplies.
Our staff of tutors includes credentialed teachers, college graduates, and current college students, as well as peer volunteer tutors to serve student needs. Our mission is to be the place scholars gather to strive for academic excellence.
Drop-in tutoring - Available to all DHS students, drop-in tutoring is available whenever the Tutoring Center is open! We have a friendly and well trained team of tutors to help students with their academic subjects. Students are welcome during GAEL period, lunch, and after school. While we cover almost every subject DHS offers, we don't cover all subjects all hours. Be sure to check the subject schedules to see when tutors are available for each subject.
FOCUS - Some students are assigned to FOCUS classes instead of GAEL period. Students in FOCUS learn organization and study skills in addition to getting help in their academic classes. This class is mandatory, like any other class, but when students have acquired the skills they need to be successful, and they are sustaining their target grades, they will move back into the GAEL period.
Single-Subject Mandatory tutoring - Mandatory Tutoring is assigned by teachers to students who need a little extra help in a subject, but do not need to be assigned to a FOCUS class. Teachers fill out the mandatory tutoring Online Form. Tutors will work with any student who have been assigned to Mandatory Tutoring, and will log the time spent on our Tracking Form so that teachers can see that students have come to tutoring. Tutors will not seek out students--students must take the initiative to come to tutoring when they have been assigned to Mandatory Tutoring.
