Summer Work:
Summer reading is necessary to keep your mind active and prepare you for the upcoming year. The summer assignment consists of reading three stories that make up our first unit of the year (they are available electronically on a separate page of this website)
The reading you will do this summer is made up of three short stories all available on this web site. Two are common to the overall 9th grade curriculum and the third adds the advanced element. All three have a common focus of developing suspense that will be the focus we use for our reading.
These stories are:
“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell
“Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez
“A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor
As you read, think about how the author creates suspense. Below are some key devices writers may use to create suspense. See which of the following devices each writer uses in his/her story to help establish suspense.
We will begin working with these stories as soon as school starts, so please be prepared.
Note: Every summer we get emails from students asking if they need to do quote notes. Nowhere on the instructions does it ask for quote notes. We will not collect anything when school starts. However, if you want to do quote notes as a way to keep track of the themes, that is up to you. We HIGHLY suggest that you print out the stories and annotate them. These annotated copies can be used to work through assignments once school begins.
